Grieving Yoshida leads Japan to win over Russia
THREE-TIME Olympic champion Saori Yoshida helped Japan win a women’s wrestling World Cup on Sunday, just days after her father died.
Yoshida defeated Maria Gurova by technical fall in the 53-kilogram class as Japan captured its first title in two years with an 8-0 win over Russia. Yoshida’s 61-year-old father Eikatsu was found dead in his car after suffering a brain hemorrhage on Tuesday. “I felt like my father was here fighting with me today,” Yoshida said. “I want to thank all the fans who came out today and offered their support. I feel great.”
