Hawks beat Dragons to take Japan Series
THE Softbank Hawks beat the Chunichi Dragons 3-0 in Game 7 of the Japan Series in Fukuoka yesterday to win Japanese baseball's championship for the first time since 2003.
Starting pitcher Toshiya Sugiuchi struck out eight while giving up three hits over seven innings for the win. Chunichi starter Daisuke Yamai walked in a run in the bottom of the third. Catcher Katsuki Yamazaki drove in a run on a single to right in the fourth and the Hawks added another run in the seventh inning on a single to center by Seiichi Uchikawa. The Dragons won the first two games of the series but the Hawks won three straight at Chunichi's Nagoya Dome to take a 3-2 lead. Chunichi won Game 6 to force a decisive final game.
