Italy downs Kenya to advance at worlds

EUROPEAN champion Italy defeated Kenya yesterday to secure a spot in the second round of the women's volleyball world championship in Hamamatsu, Japan.

Cristina Barcellini scored a team-high 12 points, and Lucia Bosetti and Serena Ortolani added 11 each in the 25-9, 25-7, 25-21 win as Italy improved to 3-0 in Group B. Kenya dropped to 0-3. Top-ranked and Olympic champion Brazil also secured a spot in the second round with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 win over the Netherlands. The United States also advanced to the second round with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-17 win over Germany in Group C. In Group D, Turkey improved to 2-1 with a 25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 23-25, 17-15 win over the Dominican Republic. Defending champion Russia improved to 3-0 with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 victory over winless Canada and South Korea overpowered China 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 and is 3-0.
