Jang rules once again

SOUTH Korean Jang Mi-ran set a world record and claimed two gold medals in the women's over-75-kilogram division at the World Weightlifting Championships in Goyang, outside Seoul, yesterday, winning her fourth straight super-heavyweight title.

She heaved 187 kg on her third and final clean and jerk, beating her previous world record set at last year's Beijing Olympics by 1 kg.

However, the world's strongest woman had to settle for silver in the snatch, behind Russia's Tatiana Kashirina. The Russian lifted 138 kg, while Jang managed 136 kg.

Jang won another gold for the best total score of 323 kg, with Kashirina second and China's Meng Suping taking the bronze.

Also, Svetlana Podobedova of Kazakhstan set three world records to claim three golds in the women's 75 kg division.

Podobedova lifted 132 kg on her third and final attempt in the snatch, beating the previous record by 1 kg.

She also hoisted 160 kg in the clean and jerk. Her combined 292 kg broke the previous record by 6 kg.
