Japan Sumo chief resigns as gambling probe continues

The head of Japan's sumo association has resigned citing health reasons as investigations continue into an illegal gambling racket linked to organized crime, local media reported today.

Former 'yokozuna' Musashigawa resigned at a board meeting yesterday, Kyodo news said, only a week after returning to the post following surgery for stomach cancer in July.

He would be replaced by Hanaregoma, former known as ozeki Kaiketsu, the agency added. 'Ozeki' is the second-highest rank in sumo after 'yokozuna'.

"We have a lot of problems we need to solve but I want to take care of them all, one issue at a time," Kyodo quoted Hanaregoma as saying.

Sumo has been rocked by a scandal involving an illegal baseball betting racket, which has swept up dozens of wrestlers and been linked to Japanese crime syndicates.

The ancient sport's image has taken a battering in recent years after damaging assault, drugs and drink scandals.
