Kauto Star wins record 4th straight

KAUTO Star became the first horse to win the King George VI Chase for four straight years on Saturday.

The nine-year-old gelding took the lead on the last turn and was never seriously challenged over the 4.8-kilometer jump course in Kempton, England.

Jockey Ruby Walsh, again on board, coasted over the last three fences to take the 8-13 favorite level with Desert Orchid on four race wins. The legendary gray only managed three of those in a row.

"For any horse to come back for the same race four years on the trot is some ask, but to win it is incredible and it is an absolute privilege to ride him," Walsh said. "He's an amazing horse.

"I'd say that was the best King George I've ridden in as regards pace. They went a really good gallop."

Madison du Berlais, a 10-1 shot, edged out Barbers Shop, owned by Britain's Queen Elizabeth, for second place.

Kauto Star is now a clear 6-4 favorite to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March for a third time in four years after taking the title in 2007 and 2009.

He is already being offered at the same odds to win the King George VI Chase again at Kempton next year.
