Kazakh teen sets new world mark

ZULFIYA Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan set a world record in the clean and jerk to win the gold medal in the women's 53-kilogram division at the world weightlifting championships in Paris on Sunday.

Chinshanlo lifted 130 kilos in the clean and jerk to beat the previous mark of 129 set by China's Li Ping in 2007. The 18-year-old Kazakh also managed 97 kilos in the snatch for a combined 227.

Aylin Dasdelen of Turkey took silver for the second year in a row with a 219 total. Ji Jing of China finished third with a combined 214.

China's Zhang Jie won the men's 62kg category. The 2010 runner-up heaved 145 in the snatch and 176 in the clean and jerk for a 321 total.

Defending champion Kim Un-Guk of North Korea led after lifting 150 in the snatch but could only hoist 170 in the clean and jerk for a combined 320 to finish second. Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia took the bronze medal.

In the snatch, the bar is raised above the head in one continuous motion. The clean and jerk is a two-part lift in which the bar is first pulled up to shoulder level, and then thrust overhead.
