Kiwis douse Korean hopes
NEW Zealand stayed in contention for its first-ever appearance in the semifinals of the men's field hockey World Cup with a 2-1 win over South Korea in New Delhi, India, yesterday.
Both goals for the Black Sticks came in the first half as Andrew Hayward converted a penalty corner in the fifth minute, before captain Dean Couzins pushed in a penalty stroke in the 22nd.
South Korea reduced the margin in the final minute through a stroke by Lee Nam-yong.
It was New Zealand's second win in three matches, giving the Kiwis six points in Pool A.
The Netherlands (six points) and defending champion Germany (four) were playing their third round of matches later in the day.
New Zealand, which has not finished higher than seventh in the World Cup, must win its last two games against Argentina and Germany to book a semifinal spot.
South Korea, the Asian champion, is virtually out of the race with just three points in the bag.
On Thursday, Australia thumped South Africa 12-0 for a record victory margin in the tournament.
European champion England beat Pakistan 5-2 for its third straight victory to move closer to a semifinal spot and Olympic silver medalist Spain beat India by an identical margin in Pool B at the Dhyan Chand National Hockey Stadium.
Captain Barry Middleton scored twice as England moved up a gear in an exciting clash to hand Pakistan its second defeat in three matches.
Jonty Clarke and Ashley Jackson put England 2-0 up at halftime before Pakistan rallied strongly to equalize through Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt.
Clarke scored a second goal and Middleton struck twice to help England regain control after experienced defender Richard Mantell suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out for rest of the tournament.
