Kutscher rides away with honors

GERMAN rider Marco Kutscher and his 12-year-old gelding Cornet’s Cristallo took the honors at the 1.50/1.55m competition on the opening day of the Longines Global Champions Tour in Shanghai yesterday.

Spectators braved the wet weather to remain seated for the jump-off between 13 riders.

Brazilian rider Doda de Miranda on AD Rahmannshof’s Bogeno set the early pace leaving the rest of the field chasing him. He watched every round closely from the side of the sand arena until British rider Scott Brash and his Hello Annie took the lead with a 0.2 second advantage.

The rain failed to hold back the last three challengers as Dutchman Marc Houtzager on Sterrehof’s Uppity became the next to top the leaderboard with a time of 37.82. He was surpassed by Swede Henrik von Eckermann with his chestnut mare Gotha with a time of 37.33.

Marco Kutscher then executed all the necessary risks to cross the finish line in 36.28 for a final victory ahead of today’s Grand Prix battle.

The opening class, a 1.45m two-phase competition in the morning, was won by US rider Kent Farrington with his 13-year-old Luidam mare Blue Angel. Marco Kutscher riding Van Gough finished second and Swiss rider Pius Schwizer on Dundee vd Dwerse Hagen placed third.
