Lack of meat debilitates China's volleyball team

The China Women's National Volleyball Team, once the world No. 1, fell almost to the bottom at the 2012 World Grand Prix because the players haven't eaten any meat for three weeks on fear of illegal meat additives, said their coach Yu Juemin.

China lost three rounds of matches to the US, which defended its championship for a third year running in yesterday's final in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province.

China just won one game during the tournament and ranked the fifth among the six countries. Yu said his athletes haven't eaten meat for three weeks, which affected their performance and caused them spasms in the marches, today's Beijing News reported.

"We are wary of meat tainted by lean meat powder and we didn't eat any during the game period until we came back to Beilun," Yu said, adding that in the next 30 days ahead of the London Olympic Games, athletes will have enough meat.

Lean meat powder, also known as clenbuterol, produces leaner meat but can cause nausea, dizziness and heart palpitations in humans. Athletes tested positive of clenbuterol will be banned from the Olympics.
