Latvala takes Wales, Loeb celebrates title
JARI-MATTI Latvala of Finland took advantage of the retirement of newly-crowned champion Sebastien Loeb to win the season-ending Wales Rally GB yesterday, the Ford driver's first victory of 2011.
Latvala started the final day 6.1 seconds ahead of Loeb and was given an early boost when the Frenchman was forced to withdraw from the race halfway through the 18th stage, following a head-on collision between his Citroen and another car. Latvala finished three minutes, 42 seconds ahead of Norway's Mads Ostberg (Ford). Another Norwegian driving for Ford, Henning Solberg, was third. Loeb had already clinched his eighth straight world rally title following nearest challenger Mikko Hirvonen's retirement with engine damage on Friday.
