Leeds Stays In 3rd Tier

LEEDS will have to spend a third season in the third tier of English soccer after being held to 1-1 by Millwall in a League One playoff semifinal to lose 1-2 on aggregate on Thursday.

Trailing 0-1 from the first leg, Leeds went ahead through Luciano Becchio in the 53rd minute. But Jermaine Beckford, scorer of 34 goals this season, had a penalty saved by Millwall goalkeeper David Forde in front of 37,036 fans, the highest this season outside of the Premier League.

Several players were shown the yellow cards or warned for wild tackles. But Nadjim Abdou equalized for the Lions in the 74th and Millwall held on for a place in the playoff final against either Milton Keynes Dons or Scunthorpe.

A Champions League semifinalist in 2001 after finishing third in the Premier League, Leeds dropped into the third tier for the first time in 2007 after a financial crisis led to points deductions and a series of relegations.
