Liao relives Olympic triumph with sweep

OLYMPIC champion Liao Hui of China swept the men's 69-kilogram class with three golds while arch-rival Vencelas Dabaya-Tientcheu of France failed to get a total result at the world championships in Goyang, outside Seoul, yesterday.

The 22-year-old Liao, who won at the Beijing Games last year on his Olympic debut, snatched 160kg and lifted 186kg in the clean and jerk for a total lift of 346kg.

He beat Armenia's Arakel Mirzoyan into second place by 12kg, with Indonesian Triyatno securing the bronze medal with a 330kg total.

Romania's Ninel Miculescu, who was second in the snatch with 155kg, could only finish fourth with 328kg total, failing on both his attempts at 178kg and 180kg in the clean and jerk.

Dabaya-Tientcheu did not earn a total result as the Beijing Olympic silver medalist snatched 149kg to place fifth before failing in all his three clean and jerk attempts at 185kg.

Liao, who originally called for 190kg in his first jerk bid and didn't come out until all other lifters had failed to lift 185kg, lowered it to 186kg.

Earlier, Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan won the women's 53kg category gold medal.

Chinshanlo tied the world record of 129kg in the clean and jerk to win the title with a combined total of 221kg, while China's Chen Xiaoting finished second. Yoon Jin-hee of South Korea took the bronze.

Chen, however, was first in the snatch after heaving 95kg.
