Loeb closes in

DEFENDING champion Sebastien Loeb protected his overnight lead to win his seventh straight Catalunya Rally in Salou, Spain, yesterday and take an eight-point lead over Finland's Mikko Hirvonen going into the final race of the season. The 37-year-old Citroen driver was the fastest through the day's six stages to finish the race over two minutes ahead of Hirvonen. The Frenchman can claim his eighth consecutive world rally title at the decisive Wales Rally on November 10-13. Loeb said, "We have done a really good weekend but coming from three bad rallies I could not believe this result before we came to the end."
