London gets nod

LONDON will fulfil a promise of a legacy for track and field following next year's Olympics after it was chosen to host the 2017 world athletics championships on Friday by beating Doha for the right to stage the global showpiece for the first time.

The International Association of Athletics Federations announced in Monaco that the 2012 Games host London won by 16 votes to 10 among council members. Meanwhile, Australia's Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning the vote in St Kitts on Friday by beating the Sri Lankan city of Hambantota. The 70 members of the Commonwealth Games Federation meeting in the Caribbean nation voted 43-27 to award the 21st edition of the games to Australia for the fifth time.
