Lu, Yang take honors
SHANGHAI bowler Lu Wei and Guangdong native Yang Suiling, a national team member, won the China Bowling Challenge in Shanghai yesterday, an open-air bowling tournament that serves as the year-end final of the four-leg Shanghai Bowling Golden League.
The two-day tournament in a shopping center on Dong’an Road in Xuhui District featured 14 top-ranked bowlers from the Golden League besides bowlers invited from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. It was the first time China was hosting an open-air bowling competition. “The purpose was to attract spectators and promote the sport,” said Song Huaxun, an official with China Sports Bureau. “The tournament was moved outdoors with some added entertainments to make it popular to the public.”
Shanghai Bowling Golden League is in its third year. Song said the national sports bureau will give more support to the league next year to help promote bowling, once a popular sporting activity in Shanghai.
