Luxemburgo fired

Former Real Madrid and Brazil boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been sacked as coach of 2012 Brazilian champion Fluminense, club president Peter Siemsen said in a statement yesterday. Luxemburgo, 61, who was appointed in July, will be replaced by former Flamengo and Vasco da Gama coach Dorival Junior, 51, who has been given a contract until the end of the year. The announcement followed Fluminense’s 0-1 weekend loss to Corinthians, extending the injury-ravaged club’s winless streak to nine matches and dropping the Rio de Janeiro-based team to 18th place in the 20-team standings, with only five matches remaining. The bottom four clubs in the division are relegated.
