Mackay in coma

ACT Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay was placed in a medically induced coma after he was hit by a motor vehicle in South Africa. Mackay suffered spinal injuries as well as a broken leg after he was struck by an armored response vehicle in Durban in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Brumbies team doctor Warren McDonald said 26-year-old Mackay was in a serious but stable condition and had been placed in a coma while he awaited further surgery over the next two days. Mackay was recruited by the Brumbies after spending the past five years playing rugby league.
