Man City fan ‘critical’ after alleged assault in Germany

German police confirmed yesterday that a Manchester City fan is in a critical condition following an alleged assault after the English Premier League club’s UEFA Champions League match against Schalke 04.

Police in Gelsenkirchen say a 32-year-old male City fan was allegedly punched at Schalke’s Veltins Arena, near the away fans section, and suffered a “massive traumatic brain injury” after falling.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition is described as “critical.”

Local police are investigating a clash between two Schalke and two City fans, which led to the injury, and have called for witnesses.

City issued a statement on its website yesterday saying it was “aware of an alleged assault after the match.”

“The club are working with Greater Manchester Police and German Police to ascertain more information,” it said.

“Club staff have remained in Germany to support the family of an injured City fan who is currently in a critical condition in hospital.”

Pep Guardiola’s EPL leader sealed a dramatic 3-2 win in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday despite being down to 10 men after Nicolas Otamendi was sent off.

The victory in the first leg of the last-16 tie leaves the English club a firm favorite to progress to the quarterfinals with the return in Manchester on March 12.

Leroy Sane, meanwhile, has admitted feeling “sorry” for his stunning free-kick against ex-club Schalke which helped City seal the dramatic win.

City was in trouble at 1-2 down, playing with 10 men after Otamendi was sent off on 68 minutes, before Sane struck.

The Germany winger, a product of Schalke’s academy who left for City in 2016, came off the bench and smashed home a free-kick to equalize on 85 minutes.

Raheem Sterling then tapped home City’s superb winner in the 90th minute, after a brilliant long-range pass from goalkeeper Ederson.

“Yeah, I was a bit,” Sane told reporters when asked if he was sorry to score against Schalke. “I couldn’t really celebrate, of course I was pleased for my team, but to score a goal like that against my ‘former love’...”

Having waited 78 minutes to come off the bench, Sane was delighted to finally run out at the Veltins Arena.

“It was very emotional for me to be back in my hometown,” said Sane.

“It was great to be able to play in this great atmosphere in front of these fans.

“In the first half I had goosebumps, the way the Schalke fans urged their team on.”

City tops the EPL on goal difference while struggling Schalke is down near the relegation places in the Bundesliga.

Yet the Germans gave Guardiola’s side a scare as Nabil Bentaleb netted two first-half penalties, both awarded after the video assistant referee intervened, to cancel out Sergio Aguero’s early goal.
