Matera cleared
Argentina flanker Pablo Matera has been cleared of eye gouging in the Rugby Championship test against South Africa. Matera was cited for making illegal contact with the eye area of Springbok flanker Francois Louw at a ruck in last Saturday’s game in Mendoza and was called to a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday. Southern hemisphere rugby body SANZAR said yesterday that the 20-year-old Matera was found not guilty because it wasn’t certain that he made contact with Louw’s eyes. Argentina No. 8 Leonardo Senatore also was called to a judicial hearing after being cited for biting an opponent in the same game. SANZAR hasn’t yet announced its ruling in his case.
