NZ versus Oracle for America’s Cup
Team New Zealand booked its berth in the 34th America’s Cup finals against Oracle Team USA with another emphatic victory over Italy’s Luna Rossa on San Francisco Bay on Sunday.
The Kiwis took the challenger series 7-1 by winning the decisive eighth race in the best-of-13 finals by three minutes and 20 seconds. They secured the right to take on defender Oracle on San Francisco Bay, starting from September 7, for world yachting’s venerable prize. It’s the fifth time in the past six America’s Cup clashes that New Zealand will be a contestant. The Kiwis’ last appearance in the America’s Cup finals saw them fall 2-5 to Switzerland’s Alinghi in Valencia, Spain, in 2007. Oracle then defeated Alinghi for the prize in 2010 in an edition beset by legal troubles.
