Netherlands, Germany advance to semifinals
THE Netherlands lost to South Korea 2-1 but joined Germany in the semifinals of the field hockey World Cup yesterday in New Delhi, India.
Two-time defending champion Germany defeated New Zealand 5-2 to top Pool A and set up a semifinal tomorrow against England.
The Dutch will meet Pool B winner Australia.
Germany led 3-0 until New Zealand scored twice in three minutes with 16 minutes to go. But two penalty corner goals in the last seven minutes ensured Germany advanced with its biggest win over the Black Sticks at the World Cup.
Germany's goals came through Christoph Menke (15th minute), Florin Fuchs (28th), Philip Witte (47th), Moritz Furste (63rd) and Matthias Witthaus (64th). New Zealand scored through Shea McAleese (51st) and Nicholas Wilson (54th).
"The second half was close and there came a turning point when New Zealand scored two goals," Germany coach Markaus Weise said.
"I felt as if the New Zealand goals happened in 10 seconds, and anything could have happened at that time. We started to feel shaky, but did not fall in the end," he said.
On Monday, Desmond Abbott scored two goals to lead Australia past Pakistan 2-1.
Australia, losing finalist in the last two World Cups in 2002 and 2006, topped the pool standings on goal difference after finishing level with England on 12 points from five matches.
Abbott scored in the 38th and 67th minutes to ensure Australia's victory. It finished with a goal difference of plus-17, while England's dropped to plus-5 after it lost its last pool match 2-0 to Spain.
England qualified for the semifinals for the first time in 24 years.
Pakistan opened the scoring in the 24th minute on a penalty corner conversion by Sohail Abbas.
"It's nice to finish on top of the pool, and now the semifinal will be a different competition," Australia captain Jamie Dwyer said.
