New league to lure in more talents
CHINESE fencing association are promising an improved domestic league from next year with an eye on developing the sport and grooming more talents.
“It’s my dream to see fencing have 1 million followers around the country,” said Yuan Xiangyang, General Secretary of China Fencing Association. Yuan was talking to the media after the association reached an agreement with sports promoting company SECA for an improved China Fencing League next year.
The amateur-level league was first organized in 2009 with fencing clubs in various provinces and cities becoming the local organizers for each stop.
But from next year, the league will have a more standardized format — seven stops across the country from March to December, SECA said. Each stop will be for 2 or 3 days and will feature all three disciplines — foil, epee and saber. SECA is hoping that there would be 3,000 participants at each stop.
The host cities for the seven stops are yet to be announced. The events will be streamed live on www.zhibo.tv. Top-ranked fencers will get to represent China at international competitions.
“This is another platform for the national team to look for talents,” said Zhong Man, former national team saber fencer and gold medalist at 2008 Beijing Olympics. Zhong said he himself will take part in the league.
“Amateur competitions can popularize the sport. This platform will connect those interested in the sport to professional coaches.”
