New marathon route shows the best of the city

THE annual Shanghai International Marathon is going to have a new route that will connect the city's main attractions on both sides of the Huangpu River, the race organizers said today.

The 2010 Toray Cup will start on December 5 from the pedestrian street of Nanjing Road E. in Puxi and finish at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Pudong, still under construction.

"The new course will link up the city's landmarks such as the Bund and the China Pavilion to show varied charms of Shanghai," said Chen Yiping, deputy director of Shanghai Sports Bureau.

It will be the first time that this international running event will connect both sides of the Huangpu River in its 14-year history, Chen added.

Runners will cross the river through the double-deck Fuxing Road Tunnel, he said. And the marathon can also promote the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, which will be held in the Oriental Sports Center.

Application for marathon participation begins on September 1. Enthusiasts can apply through www.shmarathon.com or call 64397029 for information.
