Novikava ends wait for gold

NASTASSIA Novikava of Belarus lifted 136 kilograms in her last attempt in the clean and jerk to win the gold medal in the women's 58-kilogram division at the world weightlifting championships in Paris on Monday.

Novikava, a runner-up at the previous two worlds, also hoisted 101 kilograms in the snatch for a combined 237kg. Li Xueying led after lifting 103kg in the snatch, but the 2009 world champion could only heave 133 in the clean and jerk for a total of 236kg to finish second.

"I got two slivers in the last two world championships, so I decided to get the best one this time," Novikava said.

"I was very determined, I think that mattered at that moment," the Belarussian lifter added.

This is the first time since 2002 that Chinese lifters have failed to win the gold in this category at the world championships.

Li, who beat Novikava in the 2009 world championships, finished first in the snatch event with a lift of 103kg, two more kilograms than her Belarussian opponent.

Then she finished her clean-and-jerk with 133kg.

Novikava, who lifted 129kg in her second attempt, needed to raise at least 136kg to win the title. She did it.

"This is my best birthday gift," said Novikava, who will turn 30 in nine days.
