Official killed after being hit by javelin

A SPORTS official in Germany has died after being struck in the throat by a javelin, police said.

The 74-year-old man was adjudicating at a youth athletics event in Duesseldorf when the incident happened late on Sunday. Paramedics revived the victim at the scene and an emergency doctor escorted him as he was rushed to the city's hospital, where he was operated on after losing a lot of blood from his main artery. He died of injuries early yesterday. The local athletics association for Duesseldorf and Neuss identified the man as Dieter Strack. The 15-year-old athlete who threw the javelin was receiving psychological counseling. The competition in the Rath district of Duesseldorf was called off after the incident.
