Pakistan fires field hockey coach
NATIONAL coach Michel van den Heuvel was fired by the Pakistan Hockey Federation on Thursday for violating his contract only four months before the London Olympics.
The PHF unanimously agreed to replace Van den Heuvel with former Olympian Akhtar Rasool, said president Qasim Zia. "A coach who signed another contract besides having a valid contract with Pakistan is not acceptable," Zia said. Pakistan qualified for the London Games when Van den Heuvel guided the field hockey team to gold at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Van den Heuvel told Dawn newspaper that he has a contract with the PHF until the Olympics, and he expected the federation to "respect the contract". "I don't have any contract with any club."
