Rachel Alexandra out of Belmont

PREAKNESS winner Rachel Alexandra will not run in the Belmont Stakes, its owner said on Friday.

Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness on May 16 in a brilliant near wire-to-wire effort, becoming the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown series. "After careful consideration, we have decided not to run Rachel Alexandra in the Belmont Stakes," the filly's co-owner, Jess Jackson, said in a statement. The move frees Rachel Alexandra's jockey, Calvin Borel, to ride Kentucky Derby champion Mine That Bird in the US$1 million Belmont in New York on June 6.
