Record surpassed
ONE of the seemingly untouchable records in Japan's ancient sport of sumo tumbled yesterday when Kaio notched his 1,046th win to surpass former 'yokozuna' great Chiyonofuji. Kaio, a rank below the elite yokozuna rank at 'ozeki', bulldozed out opponent Kyokutenho in Nagoya and appeared the most stunned person in the building afterwards. After watching his record broken, Chiyonofuji, now sumo gym chief Kokonoe, said: "He fought like an ozeki (champion). He is a wonderful role model. Great effort pays off."
