Rising star Tomic stuns Ferrer at Shanghai Masters

BERNARD Tomic of Australia upset seventh seed David Ferrer of Spain 6-4, 6-2 at the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday.

Tomic, at a career-high No. 20 in the ATP Rankings, struck 24 winners to just 13 unforced errors in the 70-minute victory, converting four of five break points.

Tomic brought up triple match points when Ferrer's forehand return caught the net. The Australian closed it out on his first when the Spaniard fired wide.

In spite of the straight sets win, the Australian believes that the match was very tough. "It was tough conditions. Playing a very difficult player. It's not easy when you step on court with him," he said.

Having come into the match, the Spaniard led the duo's ATP head-to-head 3-1 but Tomic had won their most recent clash on hard-court at Indian Wells and had come off an impressive straight-set win over Ferrer's compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the first round at Shanghai.

Talking about the past season, Tomic was very satisfied with his improvement.

The 22-year-old said: "I feel very confident. This year I started I think at 78 in the world, now I got into the top 20 in the past weeks. Now is a big chance to finish the year very close to the top 15. I have to work hard."
