Roma title hopes hit by Chievo stalemate

AS Roma failed to take its chance to close the gap on Serie A leader Inter Milan wasting a host of chances and ending with just a goalless draw at Chievo yesterday.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s side has 35 points, five behind unbeaten Inter, which drew 0-0 at arch-rival Juventus on Saturday, following a frustrating display in Verona that saw the away side force Chievo’s veteran goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino into some excellent saves.

Roma can be caught by local rival Lazio, which is fifth on 32 points and hosts Torino tonight, while it will also find itself six behind Napoli should Maurizio Sarri’s second-placed side beat Fiorentina yesterday and retake top spot from Inter.

Chievo moved up to 10th on 21 points following the draw.

Roma had 24 shots and over two-thirds of possession but when it did manage to find the target it found 38-year-old Sorrentino in fine fettle.

The Italian goalie’s best moment came when injury-plagued Patrick Schick, who was making his first start since signing from Sampdoria in the summer, bore down on goal looking for the winner with 7 minutes left.

The Czech ripped a shot that was sharply deflected, and with Sorrentino already diving one way, he stuck out a leg to save what looked to be a certain goal.

On Saturday, Inter stayed top of Serie A and unbeaten after 16 games after surviving its toughest test of the season by holding champion Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Turin.

Juve created more chances, but was foiled by Inter ‘keeper Samir Handanovic or its own poor finishing in a Derby d’Italia that never quite caught fire.

Cagliari survived a freak sequence of first-half injuries to draw 2-2 at home to Sampdoria, helped by an extraordinary goal where Samp goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano’s clearance hit Diego Farias and flew into the net.

Inter leads the standings with 40 points, two ahead of Napoli and Juventus.

Juve, which ended Napoli’s unbeaten start with a 1-0 away win one week ago, completed its fifth game without conceding a goal in all competitions and failed to score for the first time in 45 Serie A matches — a run stretching back to October last year.
