Rookie phenom

Hideki Matsuyama became the first rookie to claim the Japanese tour’s money title yesterday with a win at the Casio World Open. Matsuyama shot a 70 in the final round at Kochi Kuroshio Country Club in Kochi to finish at 12-under 276, one stroke ahead of Yuta Ikeda. The 21-year-old university student received US$390,000 for yesterday’s win, bringing his earnings this season to slightly more than US$2 million. He turned pro in April.
