S. Korea's Jin wins 10m air pistol gold

South Korean sharpshooter Jin Jong-Oh won Olympic men's 10m air pistol gold today on the first day of action at London's Royal Artillery Barracks.
Italy's Luca Tesconi made a brave attempt to close a seemingly impregnable gap to Jin at one stage in the final to secure silver, 2.4 points behind the winner, while Serbia's Andrija Zlatic won bronze.
World number two Jin, 32, came into the afternoon final with a significant gap of two points over China's defending champion Pang Wei but Pang immediately lost ground to his Korean rival, making his task even harder.
But after looking a certainty for gold with some consistent shooting, Jin faltered, allowing Tesconi to close the gap and retain an interest in the title going into the final shot.
Jin, who notched a total of 688.2 points, won silver in the 10m air pistol event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and gold in the 50m pistol in China. He also grabbed silver in the 50m pistol in Athens in 2004..
World number one Tan Zongliang of China, seeking his first Olympic gold, crashed out in qualifying.
The top eight competitors from the qualification round reached the final, shooting a further 10 shots, each fired individually under timed conditions.
The score in the final is added to the score achieved in the qualification round to determine the winner.
In the first shooting event of the London Games earlier Saturday, China, who took five of the 15 golds on offer on home soil in 2008, won gold with Yi Siling grabbing the women's 10m air rifle title.
