Saddle up in the suburbs: spring saunters

SPRING has sprung, once again welcoming the Longines Global Champions Tour to Shanghai for its third leg of the season. From April 28 to 30, equestrian aficionados from all around the world will flock to see the delicate poise and awesome power of the world’s finest show jumping horses.

If you are new to horsemanship and are inspired by the majestic gait of our equine friends, you may just want to take the reins yourself. If you’re looking to saddle up at a local equestrian club, look no further, because we found them for you.

Shanghai Huihuang
Horse-riding Club

Established in 1998 and a member of the China Equestrian Association, the Shanghai Huihuang Horse-riding Club is located in the Pudong New Area. In addition to its four training grounds, the club also features restaurants, guest rooms and a fitness center.

For non-members, prices start at 390 yuan (US$57) an hour for one-on-one lessons. Beginners can also sign up for a series of 10 sessions, starting at 3,680 yuan. There are also basic, group, gold and full-access memberships available depending on how much time you want to devote to the sport. Full-access members can ride up to two hours every day, free, and are guaranteed 80 training classes. In addition, they can make use of all facilities and enjoy a 15 percent discount at the restaurant.

Songseng Equestrian Club

You won’t feel cramped at the Songseng Equestrian Club. Covering 100,000 square meters, this venue is in the style of a traditional Chinese garden. The club features an international standard hurdle arena, an outdoor training course, an indoor dressage training course, two horse breaking courses and speed tracks. Restaurants and a teahouse cater to hungry guests, and riders can relax in the luxury sauna.

There is also a chess and poker room, karaoke, a tennis court, a viewing tower, a multifunction hall, an exhibition hall, museum and a villa for overnight stays.

Quanjin Horse Club

Also a member of the China Equestrian Association, the Quanjin Horse Club features a main riding track, training area and a practice area. In addition, the meadows, hills and wooded areas of the farm are all open to riders.

The club offers standard, silver, gold and platinum memberships, ranging from 5,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan per year. Beginners not interested in a membership can drop in for 45-minute one-on-one training sessions.

Shanghai Equestrian Management Center

Covering almost 10 hectares, the sprawling Shanghai Equestrian Management Center is not only one of the largest equestrian clubs in the Yangtze River Delta Region, but also one of the most respected.

This state-owned club is a designated four-star equestrian training center and is considered one of the country’s top equestrian schools by the China Equestrian Association and UK-based Hartpury College.

The club has more than 80 horses from China’s Hong Kong, Australia and Europe, as well as a full-time staff of professional coaches, referees and veterinarians, and is fully equipped with three sandy racecourses, international standard covered arena and two smaller training ranges.

Jialiang Equestrian Club

Another member of the China Equestrian Association, and featuring equestrian classes in English and Chinese, Jialiang Equestrian Club is a good option for beginners.

The club has an indoor exercise arena, an international standards jumping court and a 500-meter track, with 30 imported and domestic thoroughbred horses. With a particular emphasis on safety, the venue uses PVC pipe for track barriers and a state-of-the-art, anti-dust cooling system.

Every summer, the club organizes riding camps for children, making the venue a good option for families. The club also emphasizes that their horses are as gentle as they are athletic, making them ideal for first-time riders.
