Sandgren deletes tweets after ruckus over controversial ties

Australian Open quarterfinalist Tennys Sandgren said yesterday that he deleted several years of tweets to 鈥渕ove forward鈥 and create a 鈥渧ersion of a cleaner start鈥 after he was questioned about his connections with right-wing activists on social media.
Sandgren鈥檚 social media activity has been closely examined during his surprising run to the final eight at Melbourne Park, with media asking him following his fourth-round win over Dominic Thiem on Monday about his links to controversial political figures and conspiracy theories.
During his post-match news conference on Monday, Sandgren denied supporting the far right movement, but said he found 鈥渟ome of the content interesting.鈥
In his interview with ESPN yesterday, he sought to clarify that remark, saying it鈥檚 鈥渄efinitely not 鈥榓lt-right鈥 content is interesting, just some individuals鈥 specific content.鈥
鈥(It鈥檚) not really specific 鈥榓lt-right鈥 content that I deem of value, I think that鈥檚 very incorrect and I don鈥檛 find information like that to be of value or to hold onto any of those things,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o it鈥檚 not who I am as a person in any way.鈥
He said he deleted all of his tweets not because it鈥檚 鈥渟omething that I鈥檓 really necessarily embarrassed about,鈥 but because he thought that 鈥渃reating a version of a cleaner start is not a bad call.鈥
鈥淧eople can screenshot, save and distribute everything they would like to,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 know that, and that鈥 fine. It is what it is. It鈥檚 just something that I thought wouldn鈥檛 be a bad way to kind of move forward.鈥
Sandgren, who describes himself as a devout Christian, said he鈥檚 also learning and growing as a person and 鈥渄efinitely doesn鈥檛 have it all together.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 more than happy to talk with people and let people know how I feel about things,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e had to put the social media aside for now, I鈥檒l take a look at it and I鈥檒l take the criticism and I鈥檒l take the good with the bad and keep learning and growing as a person and try to move forward.鈥
