Sandgren hits out at media
After losing in the Australian Open quarterfinals yesterday, Tennys Sandgren saved his final shot of the tournament for the media.
Sandgren prepared a statement directed at the media that has scrutinized his Twitter feed during his unexpected run at Melbourne Park.
鈥淲ith a handful of follows and some likes on Twitter, my fate has been sealed in your minds,鈥 Sandgren said, reading from his mobile phone. 鈥淭o write an edgy story, to create sensationalist coverage, there are a few lengths you wouldn鈥檛 go to mark me as the man you desperately want me to be.鈥
Sandgren refused to answer questions, saying that the focus around him 鈥渉as gone very far away from the tennis.鈥
Among his tweets was one where Sandgren appeared to back a debunked online conspiracy in 2016 which linked Hillary Clinton to a supposed child sex abuse ring at a Washington pizzeria. He also retweeted a video from white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes.
After facing an online backlash, he decided to wipe the slate clean, deleting years of social media postings.
He targeted Serena Williams, calling a video of her yelling at Roberta Vinci during their US Open semifinal in 2015 鈥渄isgusting.鈥 Williams had apparently taken notice, sending her own tweet during Sandgren鈥檚 match, saying 鈥淭urns channel,鈥 a message her followers interpreted as a response.
