Santos: Ronaldo ready to play for Portugal despite Juve woes

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to play in Portugal鈥檚 Euro 2020 qualifiers against Lithuania and Luxembourg despite concerns over his fitness which came to the fore last weekend, coach Fernando Santos said yesterday.

Ronaldo was substituted in the 55th minute of Juventus鈥 win over AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday, the earliest he has been taken off by the Italian champion, and he was visibly furious with coach Maurizio Sarri as he stormed down the tunnel.

Sarri said after the game that Ronaldo has been managing a knee problem for the last month without missing matches and has also been dealing with thigh and calf muscle problems.

However, Santos said there was no issue with the country鈥檚 most capped player and record scorer, who has scored 95 international goals and could reach a century in Portugal鈥檚 Group B games against Lithuania and Luxemburg.

Portugal will seal a place at Euro 2020 if it beats Lithuania and Serbia fails to beat Luxembourg.

鈥淚f he wasn鈥檛 fit we wouldn鈥檛 have called him up. Everyone likes to talk and speculate about Cristiano Ronaldo because he is the best player in the world,鈥 Santos told a news conference ahead of today鈥檚 game at home to Lithuania.

鈥淚f it was any other player there would be no such fuss. He is fit and he鈥檚 going to play.鈥

Santos, who led Portugal to glory at Euro 2016, became more irritated as he was further pressed about the Juve forward, declaring: 鈥淭his conference is not about Cristiano Ronaldo, it鈥檚 about Portugal and the game with Lithuania.鈥

Meanwhile, six teams 鈥 Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland, Russia and Ukraine 鈥 have already booked their places at the tournament and the remaining 14 automatic qualifiers will be determined after the final group games.

World champion France, and heavyweights such as Germany, England and the Netherlands are in good shape to finish in the top two in their respective groups, ensuring spots in the Europe-wide finals taking place in June and July.

There are big opportunities for Europe鈥檚 so-called lesser soccer nations, too. Finland, for example, needs only to beat Liechtenstein to qualify for its first major tournament.
