Shanghai Half Marathon to kick off next month

The 2015 Shanghai Half Marathon will be held in Pudong on May 24, featuring a total of 5,000 runners to take part in the 21km half marathon and the 12km Women’s Race.

Online registration will be opened from April 21 to 25, and all quotas will be decided through a random draw and the result will be announced on April 27.

The organizer hopes the new events will provide another platform for those who find it difficult to clinch a spot at the popular annual Shanghai International Marathon, which is scheduled for November 8 this year.

The races will start at Oriental Pearl TV Tower at 6:30am on May 24. The route covers the Lujiazui area, Shibo Avenue, Yaolong Road, Qiantan Avenue, etc. The finish lined is set at the Oriental Sports Center in Pudong.

The 21km half marathon has an entrance of 3,500, and the 12km Women’s Race will give out 1,500 quotas.

“We collected opinions from female runners, and some of them consider 21km still too demanding a distance for them,” said Zhou Jin, general manager of organizer Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Co Ltd.

Zhou said 12km is the internationally recommended distance for half marathon trainings, and therefore the organizer decided to introduce the new event to meet the demand of some women runners.
