Shanghai refutes claims over Robles

ORGANIZERS of the Diamond League meet in Shanghai have refuted claims made by the coach of Cuban hurdler Dayron Robles that he was not welcome to the event.

Santiago Antunez, the Olympic champion's coach, said Robles received a call before Sunday's meet from the organizers, saying they would appreciate if he didn't come. "That's ridiculous," a top official for the Shanghai meet said late last night when reached by Shanghai Daily. "It's just the kind of report that attracts public attention," adding that an invitation was sent out to Robles. The Shanghai Diamond League was managed and operated by the Netherlands-based International Athletics Management Inc. He suggested that Robles chose to give Shanghai the skip to compete at the Golden Spike, an IAAF meet in Ostrava, the Czech Republic, today where he set his world record time of 12.87 seconds in 2008. Robles was seen as Liu Xiang's biggest rival before the latter's injury in 2008. American David Oliver won the 110m hurdles race on Sunday, where Liu finished third.
