Shanghai to host more major events
SHANGHAI is scheduled to host more than 30 international sporting events in 2012, the Shanghai Sports Bureau said yesterday.
Li Yuyi, director of the Shanghai Sports Bureau, said the highlights will be the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix, the IAAF Diamond League Shanghai Grand Prix, the ATP1000 Shanghai Masters and the Shanghai Marathon.
New events include the 2012 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in March. Li said the city is planning to build a new skating rink in the Pudong New Area early next year to train and establish speed skaters to compete in national competitions.
Another highlight will be a friendly soccer tournament in June. Shanghai Shenhua will host the event and compete with three soccer clubs from South America, Europe and Asia. The other teams have yet to be announced.
