Sharks offer a Diamond deal for fans
Local fans of the basketball side Shanghai Sharks are in for a surprise after the Sharks announced an exclusive deal that allows them to exchange their CBA semifinal tickets for the IAAF Diamond League Shanghai to be held next month.
The Sharks have advanced to the CBA semifinal for the first time in eight years and the best-of-five semifinal series is tied 1-1.
The next two matches will be played at Shanghai's Yuanshen Sports Center today and on Sunday.
Zhang Chi, press officer for the Sharks, said spectators can use the tickets from either of the two home semifinal games and exchange them for Diamond League tickets.
Shanghai has yet to officially announce the hosting of the new athletics series but the likely date is May 23 with the venue being Shanghai Stadium. An announcement is expected soon.
The CBA tickets can be exchanged at the Diamond League's local office at 1245 Huashan Road, Building 9, from next Tuesday and until April 29. The value of the exchange ticket is however unclear.
Zhang said the two local events were a "promotion for the city" and the exchange deal was "a gift to the fans."
"Both of us are representing the city's image and we support each other," Zhang said, adding that the box office sales for the next two semifinal matches against the defending champion Guangdong Hongyuan was "pretty good" with tickets for tonight's game already sold out.
NBA star Yao Ming, a Shanghai native and a former Sharks player, bought the team last year and made wholesale changes, bringing in a new coach and a host of foreign players.
