Silver for Chinese women, Britain hits a high

CHINA finished second best in the lightweight women's double sculls at Eton Dorney yesterday, a good length and a half behind Kat Copeland and Sophie Hosking, who became the third female British crew to capture gold in the Olympic rowing regatta.

The British boat pulled clear in the last 750 meters to win in a time of 7 minutes, 9.30 seconds. Greece took bronze. No British woman had ever won rowing gold at the Olympics before this regatta, but Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins eased to victory in the double sculls on Friday and Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the pair on Wednesday.

With the men's four winning their final earlier yesterday, the host nation has four golds and is set to top the rowing medals table.

Britain powered off the start in its men's four final which had been dubbed an "Ashes" clash on a par with the cricketing rivalry between the two countries.

The commanding performance followed days of tough talking from the Australian boat and gave Britain a fourth consecutive win in the men's four.

The win by just over a second also denied Drew Ginn the chance to become the first Australian to win gold in four Olympic Games.
