Sino-US bid to upgrade coaching level

SPORTS teachers and coaches at Chinese universities and middle schools will be sent to the United States for training as part of a project to upgrade the country’s school sports coaching level.

The project was jointly launched in Shanghai yesterday by the US-based Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12), the Federation of University Sports of China and the China Scholarship Council during the China-US University Sports and Education Summit at Jiao Tong University.

The first batch of 200 sports teachers and coaches from FUSC’s member schools will take training courses at Pac-12 schools, University of Utah and Arizona State University, from September to December next year, covering the sports of basketball, athletics, swimming, etc.

“Among the problems China’s school sports has been facing are the limited choice of sports and the lack of good teachers,” said Zhu Jian, FUSC’s basketball federation president.

According to Zhu, Chinese college students’ physique and health level have been declining over the years. “Academic achievements have long been considered a favored path leading to better personal development — a perception that needs to be changed.”

Pac-12 is a collegiate athletic conference that operates in the western US. It has 12 full member institutions. Many of their talented student-athletes start earning their spurs during school days before turning professional. They include retired NBA star Bill Walton, who attended yesterday’s summit along with Yao Ming.

Walton played for the UCLA Bruins in the early 70s and won three successive College Player of the Year Award. He shared some personal stories with the audience at Jiao Tong University yesterday.

“None of my parents were sports fans — not as participants or spectators. But I had some incredible coaches in my school days that I need to thank,” he said.

Yao, who played for the NBA’s Houston Rockets, also emphasized the importance of sports in a student’s life.

“Education and sports are separated in China. We need to realize that sports is part of education, a kind of mental training. It teaches us how to be a leader, how to cooperate with others and how to face failure,” the former hoops star said.

Coming into its 100th anniversary, Pac-12, in its introduction to the Chinese market, will hold its first China Game at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong today. The basketball duel between the University of Washington Huskies and the University of Texas Longhorns is the first US sports league regular season event to be held in China.

Pac-12 revealed that next year’s China Game will feature the famed Stanford University and Harvard University.
