Spurs’ Son wins Asian Player of the Year award

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has won the International Asian Player of the Year award.

The South Korean finished at the top of a three-man shortlist reserved for Asians who play overseas, finishing ahead of Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy (Australia) and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa (Japan). The 25-year-old Son helped Tottenham finish second in the English league last season, scoring 14 goals. He also helped South Korea qualify for its ninth straight World Cup. Al-Hilal forward Omar Khribin (Syria) won the award for best performer in an Asian league, while Australia forward Sam Kerr won the women’s player of the year award. Urawa coach Takafumi Hori was named coach of the year.
