Taekwondo official arrested for corruption

A TOP Chinese taekwondo official has been detained over alleged corruption but the Chinese Taekwondo Association (CTA) said that his arrest will not affect the Chinese athletes' preparation for the London Olympic Games next year.

Zhao Lei, vice director of the China Boxing and Taekwondo Administration Center (CBTAC), was "taken away by relevant government department for investigation" one week ago, said Chang Jianping, director of CBTAC.

But Chang refused to reveal the reason behind Zhao's arrest. "I was just informed one week ago when he was taken away that he would be investigated. But I really don't know the true reason."

The 51-year-old Zhao has been one of the most prominent person in the development of taekwondo since the 1980s. He had been the head of the taekwondo section of the CBTAC and also vice president and general secretary of the CTA.

Zhao, who can speak fluent English and Russian, is also well known in the world taekwondo arena. He has been a member of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Judges Commission since 2000 and officiated in three consecutive Olympic Games since.

He was named by the WTF as one of the world's six best judges.

Under his charge, China won one gold medal in each Olympic Games since it became an official event in the 2000 Olympic Games.

Chinese sports, especially football, has been riddled with corruption in the past few years.
