Teen Nigerian 鈥榣ifter stripped of gold medal over doping
THE Commonwealth Games Federation says a 16-year-old Nigerian weightlifter has been stripped of her gold medal after a positive doping test.
Chika Amalaha tested positive for diuretics and masking agents after winning the 53-kilogram division last Friday, becoming the youngest ever female to win a weightlifting title at a Commonwealth Games.
The CGF said yesterday that the backup “B’’ sample also came back positive. The federation said Amalaha “has been disqualified from her event at the games” and has returned her medal.
The gold, which was also Nigeria’s first at the Glasgow games, now goes to Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea.
Santoshi Matsa of India, who earned the bronze, will get the silver and her compatriot Swati Singh is bumped up to third.
Amalaha was initially suspended on Tuesday after the “A’’ sample tested positive for amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide, which are both banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Amalaha set Commonwealth Games records in her weight category with a total of 196kg, breaking the previous mark of 188kg.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has said it will look into how Amalaha had access to banned substances. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, three Nigerian runners failed doping tests.
