Thousands expected to compete in Shanghai Square Dance Competition

THE CPIC Cup 3rd Shanghai Square Dance Competition will be held from July to October. Organizers expect to attract tens of thousands of participants between 30 and 70 years of age.

Square dancing is one of the most popular community activities in the country. It hit the headlines recently when cities like Nanjing in Jiangsu Province and Luoyang in Henan Province reported clashes because square dancers occupied basketball courts.

Shanghai Sports Federation vice president Li Weiting said square dance needs the support from all aspects of the society to create a harmonious state.

“It’s a good exercise, a typical self-organized social activity,” said Li. “To some extent, it covers some of the government’s work. Therefore the government should provide better service to the dancers.”

The last version of the competition attracted 44,019 dancers representing 2,479 teams. The scale is expected to be higher this year with no entrance fees.

Dancing teams can apply at community sports centers. Each team can have between 16 to 30 members. The teams will first compete in community and district level competitions before advancing into the secondary contest and later to the final.

Dancers can dial hotline 96877 for more information.
