Title defended

American team Specialized defended the women’s team time trial crown in the first event of the road cycling world championship in Italy yesterday. Specialized, winner last year in the Dutch town of Valkenburg, completed the 42.8-kilometer route from Pistoia to Florence in a winning time of 51 minutes, 10.69 seconds. The Dutch Rabo team, led by multiple world champion Marianne Vos, finished second at 1:11 with the Australian Orica team claiming third place at 1:33. It was the second consecutive title for American Evelyn Stevens, German Trixi Worrack and Dutchwoman Ellen Van Dijk, who had won the trade team event last year and teamed up with Britain’s Katie Colclough, American Carmen Small and German Lisa Brennauer this year.
