Tsarukaeva clinches gold in 63kg division

SVETLANA Tsarukaeva of Russia set a world record in the snatch to win the gold medal in the women's 63-kilogram division at the world weightlifting championships in Paris on Tuesday.

Tsarukaeva's snatch of 117 kilos beat the previous mark of 116 set by Pawina Thongsuk of Thailand in 2005. Tsarukaeva, the 2007 and 2009 runner-up, also clean-and-jerked 138 for a winning combined 255.

Defending champion Maiya Maneza of Kazakhstan was second with a 248 total. China's Ouyang Xiaofang repeated her bronze medal from 2010 with a combined 246.

Tang Deshang, also of China, won the men's 69-kilogram category with a total of 341 kilograms after lifting 155 in the snatch and 186 in the clean and jerk. Oleg Chen of Russia won silver medal with a combined 336, and Wu Chao of China was third with 335.

In the snatch, the bar is raised above the head in one continuous motion. The clean and jerk is a two-part lift in which the bar is first pulled up to shoulder level, and then thrust overhead.
