UAE dropped for horse abuse
THE International Equestrian Federation has ordered this year’s world endurance championships moved from the United Arab Emirates over horse abuse fears. The Gulf state has faced mounting pressure over the killing of exhausted horses, doping and faked results.
The UAE “is not currently in a position to guarantee that horse welfare would be fully protected at an FEI World Endurance Championship in the UAE this year”, the FEI bureau said in a statement.
The championships were due to be held in Dubai from December 10 but the United States, Swiss and other federations had led calls for the event to be moved because of the treatment of horses.
The UAE federation was suspended in March last year but reinstated in July after the national body signed a horse welfare accord with the global federation. Long distance races, popular in the Middle East, were halted again in February over renewed concerns, however.
The FEI bureau acknowledged the “hard work and progress” made by the UAE federation in endurance since it was readmitted in July.
